Finding a job can be challenging, not to talk of when you lack experience in the field you are interested in or the specific job role you are applying for. However, nothing is impossible. With the right approach and adequate preparation, you can increase your chances of landing a job interview by a large margin.
It is important to state though, that before going into any interview, it's key to research the company and the job you are applying for. They will ask about your knowledge of the subject matter before anything else, so you have to win them with your knowledge here, whether or not you have any hands-on experience.
Another thing to note here is the fact that after looking at your CV, they most likely already know you have no experience in the field, but you must have done something correct with your CV to get you in the door. This means it wasn’t your experience that got you an interview in the first place, it was the other facts on your CV.
Here are some key steps to help you land a job opportunity where you have zero experience:
- Research the job and company: Understanding the company's mission, values, and culture, as well as the responsibilities and requirements for the position, will help you tailor your resume and cover letter to the specific job. This research will also give you a better understanding of what the company is looking for in a candidate, allowing you to better showcase your relevant skills and experiences.
- Highlight your transferable skills: Emphasizing your transferable skills and achievements is another important step in the job interview process. Even if you don't have direct experience in the field, you likely have skills and achievements that are relevant. For example, if you volunteered for a leadership position in your tertiary institution or any other institution, you can highlight your leadership and teamwork skills, and demonstrate how these skills can be applied to the job you are applying for. Also, state how that you are proactive and willing to continuously learn and grow even while adding value to the company with your transferable skills.
- Take external courses relating to the field: Brandishing certifications from the courses you have taken in the field will go a long way to demonstrate your commitment to the field and improve your chances of landing the job. This will not only validate your dedication and interest in the field, but it will also help you be better prepared for the interview, as you will have a deeper understanding of the industry and the job requirements. It's also a good idea to keep learning and growing even after you have landed a job, as this will help you stay current and relevant in your field.
- Build your network: Networking with people in the industry is also another good step in the job search process, particularly if you lack experience. Reach out to friends, family, professors, and professionals you meet at events and online. Inform them of your job search and ask for their advice and assistance. You never know who may be able to help you, and networking can open up opportunities that you wouldn't have otherwise known about.
- Get common interview questions to prepare: It cannot be overemphasized how important preparing for interviews is by looking for possible interview questions. This includes questions like “Tell us about yourself?” “Why do you want to work for our company?” “What are your weaknesses?” “What value can you add to us?” “What problem do you think you can solve around here?” It is important to take the time to practice your responses, so you are confident and prepared during the interview. Practicing with a friend or family member can be helpful, as they can give you feedback and help you identify areas where you can improve.
One more tip is to ensure that during the interview, it helps to exude confidence and enthusiasm. Ensure you ask thoughtful and relevant questions about the company and the position when you are asked if you have any questions. Take whatever opportunity presents itself to demonstrate your understanding of the company and the industry, and explain how your passion, transferable skills, and interests align with the job.
At the end of it all, express your gratitude for the opportunity to interview and reiterate your interest in the position either before the interview ends or in an email after the interview.
Finally, I bring to your remembrance that landing a job without experience is possible with persistence, preparation, and a positive attitude. Continue to network with people, build your knowledge through courses, keep applying, and preparing for interviews, and before you know it, you will be resuming your first day at your desired position.
To your success!
